The Illusion of Separation: Learning to Live Aware of God’s Presence

There’s a simple truth that has completely changed the way I go through everyday life: God is always with me.

Of course, as Christians, we know that. We know God lives within us and that He never leaves us. But there’s a difference between knowing something is true and actually living aware of that truth moment by moment.

It’s surprisingly easy to go through our day almost as if we’re separated from Him—to make dinner, drive somewhere, work, take care of our kids, or deal with something stressful without really being conscious of His presence. I’ve come to think of this as an illusion of separation. God hasn’t gone anywhere. Sometimes, we’ve simply stopped being aware that He’s right here with us.

When I Forget He’s Right Here

I’ve noticed this most in moments when I’m stressed, overwhelmed, or trying to figure something out on my own. My thoughts can start spinning around the problem, and without even realizing it, I begin living as though it’s all up to me.

In those moments, I’ve felt the Lord gently remind me, “Sarah, you’re living separated in your mind again.”

He hasn’t moved. I haven’t somehow become disconnected from Him. I’ve simply become more aware of the problem than I am of His presence. And that gentle reminder brings me back: He’s here. I can listen. I can trust Him. I don’t have to figure everything out alone.

He Is Present Even When You Aren’t Aware

The amazing thing is that God’s presence with us doesn’t depend on how aware of Him we are in a particular moment. When we get distracted, overwhelmed, or focused on something else, He doesn’t stop being present.

Romans 8 reminds us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. Psalm 139 tells us that His thoughts toward us are countless. And Hebrews 13:5 gives us this incredible promise that He will never leave us or forsake us.

There isn’t a moment when God stops loving you, caring about you, or being present with you. Even when you aren’t consciously thinking about Him, He is still right there.

Letting God Be Your Protector

When painful or scary things happen, it can be easy to put walls around our hearts to protect ourselves. I’ve done that too. But God began showing me that even this can come from that illusion of separation—the feeling that I have to figure out how to protect myself.

He led me to Psalm 91:4, which describes His faithfulness as our shield and rampart. I remember looking up the word rampart and discovering that it means a defensive wall.

I loved that picture. Instead of building defensive walls around my own heart, I can let God be my defensive wall. I can let go, rest in His protection, and ask, “Jesus, You’re here. What truth do You want me to focus on right now?

Practicing His Presence in Everyday Life

Living aware of God’s presence doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes we simply need little reminders throughout our day to turn our attention back toward the One who is already with us.

You might set a reminder on your phone, place a Scripture somewhere you’ll see it often, or spend a few quiet minutes simply resting with God and becoming aware of His presence. You can even pause in the middle of an ordinary moment and ask yourself, “Am I aware that Jesus is right here with me?”

The goal isn’t to become better at remembering God so that He’ll be closer to us. He is already close. We’re simply learning to live awake to the relationship and presence we already have with Him.

You Are Never Alone

The truth is, there is never a moment when you are doing life alone. God is with you in the big moments and in the completely ordinary ones. He is with you when you feel close to Him, and He is just as present when you don’t feel anything at all.

You don’t have to strive to get closer to a God who has already made His home with you. You can simply become aware of the One who is already there.

So today, wherever you are and whatever you’re facing, take a moment to remember: Jesus is here. You are loved. You are not alone. And nothing can separate you from His love.

You don’t have to live under the illusion of separation. You get to live awake to His presence.
