How God Sees You

Have you ever found yourself beating yourself up over something you did—or trying to figure out what you need to fix about yourself? Sometimes, even as Christians, we can fall into the trap of thinking that because we know God's truth, we should have everything figured out. We think we need to pray more, believe better, stand on the right Scripture, or somehow fix ourselves.

But God never asked us to fix ourselves. He invites us to come to Him. And when we understand who we really are in Christ—and how God sees us—it frees us to stop striving and rest in what Jesus has already done for us.

The truth is that God sees you according to who you are in Christ. You are righteous, perfected, and holy in His sight. He isn't ashamed of you. He doesn't want you to hide from Him. He loves you—and He actually likes you. He enjoys being with you.

We all have struggles. We all have areas where we're still growing, and circumstances can sometimes speak really loudly. It's easy to look at what we're struggling with, something we've done, or even what someone else has said about us and begin to let those things define who we are.

But our struggles don't change the truth of who we are in Christ. God knew we could never save or perfect ourselves—that's why Jesus came. Through Him, we've been made new. Our identity isn't found in our mistakes, our feelings, our past, or our circumstances. It's found in Jesus.

Growing up, I went through some really hard things, and for a long time I lived with a lot of fear. Somewhere along the way, I began believing a lie that I was broken inside. I felt like there was this scared little girl inside of me carrying so much pain, and I was afraid that if people really saw that part of me, I would be too much for them. So I hid it.

But as I grew in my understanding of who I am in Christ, God began changing the way I saw myself. I realized that the broken, scared version of myself I had allowed to define me wasn't my true identity. In Christ, I had been made new. I wasn't defined by what had happened to me or by the fear I had experienced.

As I began seeing myself through God's eyes, He brought so much healing to those places in my heart. I could look back at hard things with a completely different perspective and begin to recognize how present He had been with me through every one of them.

Jesus Isn't Ashamed of You

One of my favorite pictures of this is the story of the woman at the well. This woman had a past. She had been married five times, and the man she was currently with wasn't her husband. Yet Jesus knew all of that before He ever spoke to her.

And still, He pursued her.

Jesus didn't come to embarrass her, shame her, or point out everything that was wrong with her. He met her right where she was and drew her in with love, grace, and compassion.

By the time she left Jesus, something had changed. The woman who had been living with shame and hiding from people went back to her town and told everyone about Him.

One encounter with Jesus changed the way she saw herself.

That's what His love does. Jesus isn't waiting for us to clean ourselves up before we come to Him. He already knows everything—and He still comes toward us. He meets us in the middle of our struggles and reminds us who we really are.

You Don't Have to Hide

Maybe your struggle looks completely different from the woman at the well. Maybe it's fear, insecurity, something you've done, something that's happened to you, or simply an area where you feel like you should be doing better by now.

Whatever it is, you don't have to hide from God.

He already sees it all, and He isn't standing at a distance disappointed in you. He loves you right where you are. Instead of trying harder to fix yourself, you can bring that place to Jesus and allow Him to remind you of what's true.

See Yourself Through His Eyes

God isn't asking you to pretend that struggles aren't real. He's inviting you to stop allowing those struggles to tell you who you are.

Your circumstances may change. Your feelings may change. There may still be areas where you're growing and things God is walking you through. But who you are in Christ doesn't change.

You can look at yourself through His eyes. You can agree with what He says about you—even when your circumstances seem to say something different.

This Is How God Sees You

You are not your worst moment. You are not your fear, your mistakes, your struggles, or the things that have happened to you. You are who God says you are.

In Christ, you are righteous. You are holy. You are loved. You are accepted. You belong. God isn't ashamed of you, and He isn't asking you to hide from Him. He wants you close.

So when shame tries to tell you to pull away, come closer. When your circumstances try to define you, remind yourself of what God says. And when you feel like you need to fix yourself before you can come to Him, remember: Jesus already did the work. You get to rest in Him.

This is how God sees you. And the more you begin to see yourself through His eyes, the more freedom you have to simply be who He created you to be.
